  • Midlife Crisis

"Middle age", emotionally, can be that time when we start to question the direction of our life, the moment at which we sense the difference between what we thought our life and identity was about, and the way it is actually turning out. Midlife can be that time when joints start to hurt, energy starts to fail, we seem to lose a grasp on our sexuality and we sense both the limits of time and vitality. If life is to mean anything, or if pleasure is to be possible, better start now; or, it feels like it is too late, and we can kiss the beauty of youth goodbye.

It is not too late, though. In some ways, it is only the beginning - aspects of childhood are burning away, and though we fear that this means youth is gone, this is an illusion, as something essentially free and youthful is always available. In fact, it never belonged to childhood; that was simply the time when we first knew it. For all the disappointments and disillusionments and pressures of life, family, finances, career, aging and dying parents, growing children, we are challenged to DO WHAT IT TAKES TO FIND A PATH BACK TO WHO WE ARE, or to who we thought we were supposed to be. Even a few minutes a day, a few hours, something that reminds us of the world according to me"; something that gets us energized, imagining, creating, breathing, blood flowing and heart beating throughout a body that can still use it, and use it well. Love and passion are still there, too, and can be revitalized.

Yet the depression and fatigue and desperation are real and affect many people. The "crisis" of middle age can be seen in the original meaning of "crisis" as crossing point, crossroads - the time to choose your path carefully, because the next half of life depends upon it. One important way of heading into the next phase of life so that it becomes a re-birth, a renaissance, is to acknowledge the challenge, what has been lost and gained, and who one really is, in contrast with the images of youth from which we've deviated in the course of really living.

This is where we come in. Our counseling and psychotherapy are a key approach to getting to know yourself all over again, and, in the process, making some real headway towards feeling better and choosing a path towards a second half that is all yours, and true to you.
